| Editorial Reviews:
Product Description Marguerite Henry s book is based on actual incidents in the life of a Grand Canyon burro. Brighty loves his life of independence along the Bright Angel Creek for which he was named, going to the rim in the summer and down to the canyon floor in winter. He is present as President Theodore Roosevelt discusses the beauty and grandeur of the Canyon and how it should be preserved for the American people. Brighty is the first to walk the historic bridge connecting the north and south rims. Befriended by prospectors, government men and campers, Brighty alternately helps his friends and runs free as the spirit moves him. His friend and companion, Old Timer, a prospector, is murdered by a claim jumper. A saddened Brighty searches for the killer, an adventure which runs through the book. Brighty of the Grand Canyon August 17, 2010 jayden robyn One of my favorites! I liked how it followed Brighty, and I liked the illustrations; I thought Brighty was cute. I liked how Brighty exposed the bad guy, and the "moon-lily" tea was funny, too!
Brighty of the Grand Canyon February 5, 2010 I loved this book, I am 7 years old. I had just returned from Colorado on holiday and had visited the Grand Canyon. This adventure was realy good and I was able to relive my experience thought the adventure. I really enjoyed the story.
Brighty: Of the Grand Canyon December 16, 2008 G. Thompson (Tennessee, USA) This is an excellent children's book. It contains history, adventure, suspense, concern for an animal, and good wins over evil. I highly recommend it for 8-12 year old children. Adults would enjoy it, too.
Sweet, sad stories from grandpa November 11, 2008 Anne Kirkham (Bremen, Germany) My grandpa spent time in and around the area in the 1930s and 1940s, working at his cousin's trading post, and claimed to have known Uncle Jimmy as an old man. In his garden he had statues of a prospector and a mule, and after he gave me this book (and my own resin 'Brighty", we would talk about "burros" as he always called Brighty, and his time in the desert.
This book is a nice Wild West adventure, complete with a badguy who really did scare me as a kid. There is something stark and melancholy about the setting and the story, as well as the "typical' Marguerite Henry romanticisation, but it's a nice little story for kids interested in the Grand Canyon, the West, history, etc. I think my brother - a history buff from the moment he could read - got more out of Brighty than I did - I preferred "King of the Wind."
But the memories of grandpa and his "burros" will always be immortalized in this book for me, just as my love for horses (and their kin) will always be a tribute to Grandpa's memory.
