Product Description Book Synopsis: Twelve-year-old Jennifer Gates is chased from her family’s ranch house by huge, monstrous figures. When her parents are savagely attacked and their horse barn set afire, she must escape into the Montana wilderness atop her Tennessee Walking Horse, Dixie, following her fearless Jack Russell Terrier, Dot. Brutal rainstorms and treacherous mudslides drive the trio into a cave deep in the mountains. A perilous journey through the darkness leads them to a pristine valley that resonates with ancient power. Plagued by disturbing dreams and visions of vanquished American Indians, Jennifer comes to believe that the ghosts and demons she imagined may be all too real. With only her stepfather’s fishing coat filled with the essentials for her survival and a flint lance head she finds in the cave, Jennifer is forced to confront a hideous evil that has been festering since the Civil War.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR: James M. Naugle grew up in Novato, California, spending a great deal of his time in Montana and living for two years in Australia. He trains and raises Tennessee Walking horses with his wife, Terri, on their horse ranch in rural Petaluma, California. Johnny’s Jacket is his first published novel.

TERROR & THRILLS in Johnny's Jacket July 26, 2010 Sara Howard (Tallahassee, FL USA) This is a well-written thriller. I just couldn't put it down. The three main characters are a 12-year old girl, Jennifer; her beloved black Tennessee Walking Horse, Dixie; and her Jack Russell Terrier, Dot. What a crew. They encounter some terrorizing evil who sets fire to their barn and then the brave trio flees to a very long dangerous adventure. They live in Montana and I have been there. Montana has some very deep wilderness.
Mr. Naugle is a word-smith and a skilled writer. Every page is filled with pulse-pounding suspense and I was trying to read and turn pages as fast as I could. Would Johnny escape the evil killers? Would Dot survive the attack of the Pit Bull? Would Dixie survive the wild stallion? This is fun and a pleasure to read.
If you read this to your kids (which they will love) be prepared to be up very late.
I see a best-selling author in Mr. Naugle. If you don't buy this one, you will miss out on a great book.
I love this one!!

A Thriller for All Ages May 25, 2010 Jerry Sorlucco (Littleton, New Hampshire) 9 out of 9 found this review helpful
Much as a "Harry Potter" novel, James Naugle's "Johnny's Jacket" can be enjoyed by both young teenagers and adults with an active imagination. Mr. Naugle brings his experience as a high school wrestling coach, horse breeder and trainer, and avid naturalist together in an action packed book replete with Jennifer, an amazing ten-year old girl, Dot, her fearless Jack Russell Terrier, and Dixie, a magnificent Tennessee Walking Horse. Chased from their ranch by monstrously looking huge men who burn the barn down, Jennifer, Dot, and Dixie manage to escape into the Montana wilderness. But their problems just begin with survival an issue at every turn as they encounter terrible weather, landslides, hungry animals, and, on the other side of a mysterious cave a ghost tribe of Indians, who, having been massacred by the monsters forefathers during Civil War, help Jennifer and her friends to defeat the monsters.
It's a great story, well written, that opens up the thought process of Dot, Dixie, and the other animals encountered along the way. As a person who lives with two Airedale terriers and Bengal cat, it's not strange to me at all to have animals "thinking" and using their unique skills to survive. There's a lot of action that can keep your teenager occupied for days. I highly recommend the book and look forward to Mr. Naugle's next.
Pretty Good Story May 3, 2010 Motoman 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
I'm not much into action adventure when it comes to stories about teenage girls and their girly pets but I actually like this story a lot! This story reads like a action flick movie with penty of action, gore, and the good guys win in the end. Since I'm a city guy who just stays indoors all the time, reading this story really transports me into the country. The author describes the countryside with good detail.
I don't know how to rub two sticks together and make a fire but this character blows me away. She is just amazing surving in the wildernes with her horse and little dog. Like a roller coaster ride the story starts off slow and then it flings you all over the place. You are thrown up and down and spins you all around until it ends.
An Amazing Adventure Story April 30, 2010 Candace P. Ishmael (Santa Rosa, CA) 7 out of 7 found this review helpful
I am an avid reader, I read every night. I started this book on a Wednesday around 6 pm, I finished it at midnight on Thursday night. I couldn't put it down! I laughed, I cried, I cheered, I lived with Jennifer outside, I rode with her, I worried about her and her animal protectors. I loved this book! Every single character jumped off the pages and came to life. Mr. Naugle brought this story to life so realistically it was amazing! Sometimes, I had to stop reading to catch my breath and wait for my heart to stop pounding! Of course, I couldn't stop for long...I had to find out what happened next!
The characters, good and bad, were very believable. I cheered on the good guys and booed the bad guys! I hope Mr. Naugle writes another book, and I'm sure the next one would be just as exciting as this one! And I agree with the reviewer who said this book would make a great movie! I'll be in line right behind her!
Simply AMAZING book!!! Cheers to you, Mr. Naugle! (Write faster!)
This one should be made into a movie April 17, 2010 Terri shaver (california) 7 out of 7 found this review helpful
If I have ever read a book that should be made into a movie, Johnny's Jacket is it. The excitement begins on page one and does not let up until the last sentence on the last page. The characters, good and bad, are amazing. I could see each one clearly in my head as I read the story. They made me laugh, scared me badly, and made me cry. The author has a talent which brings his subjects to life, where they are more than words on a page. I seriously worried about each of the good guys to the point I could not sleep wondering how they were going to survive to the next chapter.
I have read a lot of great animal oriented novels but have to say Dixie, the Tennessee Walking Horse and Dot, the Jack Russel Terrier are two of my absolute favorite animal characters ever. How the author managed to use them as heros in such a believable way without giving them human traits is classic. Although the story is centered around young Jennifer Gates, the horse and dog completely steal the show.
Whoever makes this book into a movie will have a major box office hit. I will be first in line to see it whenever it is released.
